Term Four, Week Eight, 12 December 2011

“He waka eke noa.”
A canoe we are all in with no exceptions.

Kia ora everyone,
As the above whakatauki implies – we are all in the same boat.
2011 has been a year of re-defining and re-building.

We have a new school vision, which is not a change from the past, but is simply a more definitive statement of who we are and what we hope to achieve. As I have mentioned earlier in the year our new vision is:

Our wish for the future is that Peria be a vibrant community.

We acknowledge that we as a school are an integral part of our community and as a result this brings responsibilities and opportunities.

As a school we will all be learners valued for our unique sets of strengths and talents.

We will focus on, develop and build on our strengths of being a small, rural, isolated and diverse school.

We began a journey this year by seeking to re-connect strongly with our community. This does not simply mean relying on our community to support the school (as our community has done for a very long time) but for us as a school to look for opportunities to give back to our community. If you have any ideas on ways we can do this, please let us know.

Finally, as this is my last newsletter for the year I hope you will be able to enjoy the Christmas holidays with family and friends (as I will be doing with my family ).
Arohanui,
Jason

Beach Day
We were planning a school beach day this coming Wednesday to celebrate the end of the year. Sadly, we are forced to cancel this as the weather forecast for the week is looking decidedly unpleasant.

Final Assembly School finishes at midday

Prize Giving

The last day of school for 2011 is Thursday 15th December. We will be holding our Prize Giving starting at 10am. We would love you to join us in recognising the hard work of all our students and to farewell our Year 8’s.
Once the ceremony has concluded school will be officially closed and the children will be allowed to go home with their parents. Buses will run two and a half hours earlier than usual on this day.

Te Rangi Camp

Last week Te Rangi students camped at Tokerau Beach. Accompanied by myself and a number of keen parents the crew headed off armed with heaps of sunscreen, kai and huge excitement. Arriving back on Thursday afternoon we were all absolutely exhausted, but happy.

A huge thank you to the wonderful parents who attended, helped with transport, sent baking or supported us in numerous other ways. A special mention must go to Leigh Jennings and Jeff Martin who helped organise a great deal of the camp and also to Claire Olsen and Anne Farry who travelled into town and bought the enormous pile of food in their own time.

I know a lot of special memories were made during those 3 days at Tokerau Beach so thank you to all who made it happen.
I’m sure you will join me in congratulating these students for their outstanding achievements.

Mrs Young, who chaperoned our students, said all who participated were all a credit to our school.

E.R.O. Visit
On Monday 28 November we welcomed Graeme Tregowth and Rosie Solomon from the Education Review Office. They spent three days with us, visiting students in their classrooms, chatting to staff, parents and the community and getting a feel for the special nature of our school.
Their subsequent verbal report to the Board of Trustees was very positive and they identified many of the wonderful things going on at Peria that support, develop and extend our students.
Thank you to all the people who spoke to Graeme and Rosie.

Community Consultation
Before heading off to camp I held two community consultation meetings to gather feedback on curriculum topics and to present analysis of our assessment data.
Thank you to the parents who gave up their time to have input into their children’s learning and to help guide our vision for Peria School.
If you couldn’t make it to the meeting, and would like to offer your thoughts or feedback, please get in touch with me.
