During Term 1 - 2011, Te Puna is studying
the
New Zealand Curriculum Values,
using Maori legends and stories to help us understand each value.
We used
"The Kuia and the Spider"
by
Patricia Grace to
talk about
.
Next we used the legend
"Maui's New Hook"
to study
.
We made lots of the fish Maui could catch once he had thought
of putting
a barb on his hook.
|
 |
|
Maui looked at the hook.
He had an idea. |

Next we used the local legend
"Kahukura and
the Sea Fairies" to study

|
|

Kahukura did the right thing. He walked, and walked,
and walked, until he found his dream.
He wanted one of the nets so he tricked the fairies.
Then Kahukura took the net home so
everyone
could catch some fish.

Then we used the story
"The Waka"
by Jean Prior to study

The animals in the waka are all different.
Kia Kaha!
Kia Kaha!

Haere Mai
Ki te waka.
Last we talked about
.
using the legend of
"Hatupatu
and the birdwoman".
We all thought his brothers were not fair to
Hatupatu. They only gave him the beaks, the bones, the feathers and the legs
of the bird to eat, so he was always hungry.
Then they chased him away.
Most people thought it was fair when Hatupatu chased his brothers
away, after he escaped from the Birdwoman.
They thought he should eat all the birds he caught by himself too.
(Zara and Mrs. Noakes thought he should be kind and share. )
